Last-minute APSA-nominated films to watch at BAPFF

We’ve saved plenty of the best for last at BAPFF this year, including a swag of APSA winners you won’t want to miss.

  1. Tonight, catch Writer-Director Alexey German Jr’s Under Electric Clouds (Russian Federation, Ukraine, Poland) at Palace Barracks. He won the APSA for Achievement in Directing last night.
  2. There are two screenings of The Assassin (Taiwan), including tonight’s Gala Screening at Palace Barracks and a second screening at The Australian Cinèmathéque, QAGOMA tomorrow before a free screening of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s seminal classic A City Of Sadness. Both screenings are almost sold out so be quick to secure your tickets! The Assassin won Best Director at Cannes this year and APSA 2015 winner, Cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing will attend the gala screening this evening.
  3. Tomorrow night check out Motherland (Turkey, Greece) and discover why Director Senem Tüzen was awarded this year’s APSA for Best Screenplay. Tüzen was also nominated for the APSA UNESCO Award.
  4. The unforgettable Tharlo (PRC), featuring APSA-nominated actor Shide Nyima, will be shown on the last day of the festival. Screen International calls this “unassuming but accomplished … a beautifully judged picture from a director to note”. In exciting news, the film’s write and director Emin Alper was awarded a Jury Grand Prize for his efforts on the film.
  5. And finally, if you missed seeing the tender and intimate drama An (Japan, France, Germany) earlier this week, you’ll get another chance on Sunday, when it’s screened again at Palace Barracks. This film is a celebration of the power of human beings to unite and overcome anything in their path and features APSA 2015 winner, actress Kirin Kiki.
