Johnnie To is one of Hong Kong cinema’s biggest names, director of more than 50 films and producer of even more. Revered for his stylised action films, To’s focus on storytelling and gift for drawing exemplary performances from his actors have seen him cultivate a following that includes such luminaries as Jia Zhangke and Quentin Tarantino.
For his Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts graduation project, director Ferris Lin spent two years trailing To – with his permission and cooperation – documenting the prolific auteur’s work on several productions, including Life Without Principle, Romancing in Thin Air and Drug War.
Featuring interviews with numerous collaborators (including Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng) and illustrative clips from To’s most remarkable films, Boundless offers both a candid, unvarnished insight into the director’s artistic process, and an informative look at the changing fortunes of the Hong Kong film industry.
